At the double concert we will hear two jazz bands, the German Gorilla Mask and the Austrian Sketchbook Quartet, who will be performing in Slovenia for the first time, both combining jazz with rock and other genres. The band Gorilla Mask is led by Berlin-based Canadian saxophonist Peter Van Huffel, who is inspired by Coltrane, Ayler and Zorn, but his powerful and energetic trio also derives from the dynamics of the classic power trio in the history of hard rock (such as Cream). The trio released four albums, the last three, Bite My Blues, Iron Lung, and Brain Drain, for the esteemed Portuguese record label Clean Feed.
The Vienna post-jazz Sketchbook Quartet consists of four young musicians who are connected by an interest in modern, creative improvised sound. They seek to break the boundaries between the genres and play a mixture of progressive rock and chamber jazz with a strongly emphasized rhythmic section. With their unusual line-up of instruments, sophisticated and multi-layered compositions are brought to life with youthful zeal, their expression adorned by a fresh and lively sound. “When eclectic postmodern chamber jazz meets rock. Rich with detail and a charming compositional finish that leaves you yearning for the unexpected.” (Andreas Felber, OE1 / WDR 3 Jazznacht)
The Sketchbook Quartet concert was prepared with the support of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Ljubljana.
