We will hear modern interpretations of traditional music from the northern and southern parts of the former common homeland - the Macedonian Dobrila & Dorian Duo and the band Veja, which comes from the center of Croatian Istria, Pazin. The Macedonian musicians, members of the Chalgia Sound System band since 2008, founded the duo during the epidemic and with it set out to transform the Macedonian tradition. They interpret well-known songs in an unconventional form, only with vocal and oud, and occasionally surround them with barely perceptible electronic effects. Their debut album Apocryph (Skopje Jazz Festival Records, 2021) climbed to a high third place on the Balkan World Music Chart for 2021. The roots of the Croatian band Veja go back to 2007, when the band leader Goran Farkaš started researching Istrian folk music (he is a musicologist and also the initiator of the Pazin’s TradInEtno festival). From the beginning, the band combines typical Istrian musical instruments (bagpipes called mih, accordion) with instruments from other cultures (kaval, cajon) as well as guitar and electric bass. The result of this mixing is suggestive, sometimes dark music that successfully combines traditional and modern. Along with reworkings of well-known folk songs, Veja also plays original compositions made in a similar spirit. After the debut album Dolina mlinova (2014), the second album Škura ura was recently released, which ranked 4th on the Balkan World Music Chart for the second quarter of this year.
