Lovers of contemporary American music will not be surprised, and certainly no less thrilled, to see two of the most celebrated cats on the Chicago scene coming together. Working from a deep love and knowledge of traditional and popular American musics, and having separately spent over three decades stamping their own creations on that grand tradition (Trenchmouth, The Eternals, Black Monument Ensemble, The Vandermark 5, DKV Trio, Spaceways Inc., Powerhouse Sound, to name a few), Locks and Vandermark produce a fresh and breath-taking sound. Here are two modern masters who are in tune with each other and who know exactly what the next step will be. Essential listening for young and experienced ears alike, featuring pre-recorded material, improvisation, electronics and wind, with a careful focus on spontaneous interaction and creation. Sounds for curious souls.

Teis Semey has shot to the front of the cohort of youngsters who have flooded the European jazz ports, and Amsterdam in particular, with new creative energy in the last few years. The guitar skills of this brilliant Danish talent are an engine that needs no fuel; instead, his power comes from deep reflection and a mathematical approach to band-leading, where the dosage is organised and always proportionate to the tempo and the melodies that emerge from their collaboration. Indie jazz as a response to tradition and the imagination we’ve been missing.
