At the premiere Slovenian concert, we will host one of the major attractions on the world music scene, the Monsieur Doumani, band from Cyprus, which has been reaping praise in recent years. The trio, which has been in operation since 2011, impresses with the original blend of traditional and modern musical instruments with which they recreate colourful Cypriot folk music. They play original compositions based on tradition and introduce elements of other genres, from rock to Balkan melodicism. The band has released an EP and three albums, which have received praise from critics and have been honoured with awards and ranked on the annual charts of the best world music albums. The latest album, Angathin (2018), brought to the band the ninth place on the World Music Charts Europe, while on the Transglobal World Music Chart it won them both the first place and the title of best album in the "North Africa and Middle East" category. The concert by the Cypriot trio, declared the best band in 2019 by Songlines magazine, will be introduced by the newer Slovenian quartet The Balkan Experience of Song and Ritual, which plays and sings Balkan music or "folk music from Slovenia to Turkey" in their own modern arrangements. They will present their debut album; on it, they add improvisational and narrative moments to the old songs in order to help bring tradition closer to today's listener.
