The beginning of this year's Keltika festival will be as striking and colourful as possible! We will host the American-Israeli Shanir Blumenkranz' Abraxas quartet, who will play John Zorn's compositions, and for the introduction we will listen to double bass improvisation by Jošt Drašler. Band Shanir Blumenkranz' Abraxas was formed to record album Abraxas: Book of Angels Volume 19 (2012) from the John Zorn discography series The Book of Angels. The quartet then settled as a permanent band, which continues to play mostly Zorn's compositions. In Cerkno, we will hear their renditions of new Zorn's music, as found on this year's released album Gevurah, a part of Masada Book 3 - The Book Beri'ah, a box set of 11 CDs. Abraxas mix traditional Jewish forms and radical rock and off-rock styles, with a pinch of psychedelia. Before their concert, we wil listen to subtle double bass improvisation by Jošt Drašler, who will present his first solo album The Balloon Catcher. Drašler, known from bands, such as Drašler / Karlovčec / Drašler, Zmajev rep, Malik and Kombo Zlatka Kaučiča, offers "a very wide spectrum of sound expressiveness, thanks in particular to his technical skills" (Peter Baroš, Odzven). After his solo gig, be prepared for "Sephardic Jimi Hendrix on holiday in Fez", as the band Abraxas was described by Bill Milkowski in DownBeat.
