SUDAN ARCHIVES (US)
Multi-instrumentalist Brittney Denise Parks, aka Sudan Archives, struck with the ferocity of a tornado from the American Midwest with her single ‘Come Meh Way’ in 2017, which was followed by a debut album, Athena, two years later. She has since enthralled promoters and fans with her innovative, violin-driven blend of DIY avant-garde pop, R&B and hip-hop. Although the Covid pandemic prevented Athena from hitting the concert stages with full force, the next record cemented her growing reputation. Natural Brown Prom Queen (2022), recorded with her partner in the basement of her home in Los Angeles, is a set of freewheeling female perspectives on a music industry that so often fails to match up to the demands of Black creativity, and marks a conscious move into the mainstream as a way of bringing this singular artist’s ideas to a wider audience. Lyrically bold and visually striking, Sudan Archives will bring some joyous heavy weather to Ljubljana’s premier concert stage.
LA CHICA (FR/VE)
Sophie Fustec (La Chica) blends musical inspiration from Venezuela, the country of her father’s birth, and her hometown of Paris by using a collage of heavily textured sounds that also draw on an array of contemporary influences, including such Druga Godba luminaries as The Roots, Tune-Yards and Juana Molina. Her musical world revolves around the piano and keyboards, skilfully blending classical inspirations (Debussy is a major touchstone here) with the dense intensity of analogue synth. There’s no trickery here ― just an artist conveying emotion through abstract thought and poetic self-reflection. Like Sudan Archives, La Chica is an independent, free-spirited artist whose musical aesthetics, visual imagery and live performance break down barriers and stir the soul.
