Acid Arab Live + Angélica Garcia @ Druga Godba 2024
Acid Arab Live (FR)
Acid Arab, a collective headed by Paris-based DJs Guido Minisky and Hervé Carvalho, are the world’s leading exponents of Arabic electronic music. Since forming in 2012, they have taken taking festivals and club audiences around the world by storm with their intoxicating blend of hard-edged Western electronic music and Eastern sounds and vocals, whether in DJ or in full concert form.
Acid Arab are far more than a mix, however. First and foremost, they trace an encounter between different cultures produced through numerous collaborations and constant travel throughout the Mediterranean and beyond; and it is this restless quest to refine their style that has led them to create a series of hits and leave dancefloors everywhere in a sweaty, heaving trance. This is no more evident than in their most recent album, Trois, which came out last year on cult label Crammed Discs, who spotted Acid Arab’s huge potential from the very start.
After tour appearances in over 50 countries on four continents, their sumptuous sound finally reaches us here, on Slovenian Youth Day. Acid Arab Live will mark the occasion with the force of dance and a spectrum of styles that break down every conceivable barrier, personal and political.
Angélica Garcia (US)
Angélica Garcia is an American singer-songwriter of Mexican and Salvadorean heritage who first came to the world’s attention with ‘Jicama’, a song she performed for the NPR Tiny Desk series, and that featured prominently on the NY Times’ and Barack Obama’s year-end lists. Since then, she has made a fascinating move into electronic genres while keeping her Latin roots to the fore, particularly in her vocal performance.
This change of direction coincided with a move to New York, where she signed with Partisan – home to the great PJ Harvey, among others. ‘Y Grito’ and ‘El Que’, the first singles from her forthcoming album, immediately remind us of Sudan Archives’ DIY story and, musically, of La Chica. In some sense then, last year’s memorable closing concert will get a well-deserved encore.
