In September, Amsterdam-based collective Altin Gün will open the door into the unknown, into a blend of Turkish tradition, Western funk and psychedelic rock that places the stated expressions into a completely fresh context. American radio KEXP was so overwhelmed by the band, it immediately recorded one of its famous sessions with them, while we were charmed by them live at last year’s Beaches Brew festival. In Šiška, they’ll present their debut album, released in March. They’ll be joined by Igralom, a Serbian trio that is regarded as one of the most exciting new bands in the region. Upon their return to Ljubljana, they’ll treat us to their upcoming second album Sunovrat, an explosive meeting of Africa and the Middle East.
The international ensemble Altin Gün combines musicians of Turkish, Dutch and Indonesian descent, which is felt in the music as well. It was formed by bassist Jasper Verhurst after he heard 1960s and 1970s Turkish psychedelic folk rock and artists such as Baris Manco, Selda Bagcan, Erkin Koray and the “Turkish Bob Dylan” Neset Ertas during a trip to Istanbul. After returning to Amsterdam, he gathered a group of musicians and set about updating the Turkish musical heritage for new generations.
What came out was a devilishly delicious meeting of two previously unconnected sonic worlds, of the past and the present, enticing listeners with the rich Turkish musical heritage, naughty Western funk and world music boldness. As recommended by Europavox: “All this is best experienced by witnessing their live show. Utterly danceable, and infused with a sense of mischief, they have an infectious energy and enthusiasm that doesn’t take long to transmit itself to your limbs. The music they draw on was always meant to be music of the people, and Altin Gün are returning these lost treasures to where they belong.”
We first met the Serbians Igralom in Šiška last year, when they blew us away warming up for the legendary Disciplin A Kitschme. In part due to that excellent performance, but primarily due to an exciting blend of energetic Americana and Afro-funk grooving, the trio got a slot at this year’s MENT Ljubljana – and blew us away again. The esteemed online mag Louder than War named the band one of the ten great new acts at the festival, describing it as combining the noise power of Repetitor, the bluesy trippiness of Tinariwen and the electric virtuosity of Jimi Hendrix.
In August, one of the members stopped at our free Summer in Šiška concert series as singer-songwriter Dimitrije Dimitrijević. The entire team is coming back in September, when they’ll treat us to their heavily anticipated second album Sunovrat, a collision of Saharan and Middle Eastern blues with eclectic funk, a musical explosion on whose waves glide impressionist lyrics and whose creation was also ssisted by Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts).
