This popular comical ballet (The Wayward Daughter, sometimes also The Poorly Guarded Girl) in two acts based on a libretto of the dancer and violinist Jean Bercher Dauberval is a rather plain sentimental story of a young country couple in love (Lisa and Colas), separated by the class differences and their social statuses. The libretto follows the ideas of the Enlightenment, especially those of Voltaire and Rousseau, which discuss the problem of personal freedom and social conventions. In the past two centuries, La fille mal gardée has been staged numerously on music of different authors, such as Alexander Gorsky’s choreography (on the music by Peter Ludwig Hertel, in the instrumental arrangement of Riccardo Drigo), and the choreography by Frederick Ashton (on the music by Louis Joseph Hérold, arranged by John Lanchbery).
A comic subject of the ballet emerged as inspiration after the lithograph La réprimande by Pierre-Antoine Baudouin from 1789. The original ballet structure was conceived as pastiche on more than fifty different French anthems; the ballet premiere was on 1st July 1789 in Grande theatre in Bordeaux. This ballet performance of Ballet of Slovene National Theatre Maribor will be choreographed by the former star of the Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet and the long-time artistic director and choreographer of the Dresden SemperOper Ballet, now the artistic director of Ballet Firenze, Vladimir Derevianko. The music of Maribor ballet production of La fille mal gardée is based on Hérold’s as well as Hertel’s version, and is arranged by Jean-Michel Damase.
